In the late 70′s, multiculturalism was a large topic with the Canadian government. In 1977, Guelph celebrated its sesquicentennial anniversary and the city encouraged the Multicultural Council with its various groups to take part in the celebration and showcase their heritage. The Swiss of the Guelph community joined the Germans, shared their space and time at St. Georges Square and entertained with food and music. The Jodler Klub and Canadiesli came from Toronto to take part in the festivities. After this very successful event, the Swiss felt that they should start a Swiss Club in Guelph. In November of that year [1977] , the Club was officially founded. The relationship with the German Club has remained very close, allowing the Swiss Club to hold many gatherings in their club house.
The first president of the Swiss-Canadian Club of Guelph, Karl Hangartner, and his board were very ambitious and planned several events, many of which remain popular to this day. These include the Wine and Cheese Party in the Spring, the Summer bike or canoe trip, the Fondue in the Fall, and the Christmas Party in the Winter. There is something of interest for everyone. For more information and dates, please refer to our program in the calendar of events on this website. Our Club has members of all ages including newborns, teenagers, adults and seniors; there is always someone to talk to. The current board members are: our president Christine Wenger, Fred and Frieda Steiger, Sonja Bosshard, Susan Lodge, Rene and Rina Thoma.
We are looking forward to welcome you soon.
