- Portrait of Swiss Canadian sculptor and installation artist
Born in Zofingen, Switzerland in 1964, Ernest Daetwyler immigrated fifteen years ago to Canada. He lives and works in the countryside of Atwood, close to Stratford and Kitchener, one and a half hours from Toronto, Ontario.
Ernest studied at the Schule fuer Gestaltung, Bern, the Centro Europeo in Venice, Italy and received his master diploma from the Schule fuer Gestaltung, St. Gallen, Switzerland. His concept based multidisciplinary artistic practice, with a range from drawing, painting, sculptural work in traditional materials to interactive kinetic installations and video projections, is being presented internationally. Ernest is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, Presence Suisse, the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund, the City of Kitchener, the City of Stratford and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York, N.Y.
Ernest is a director/founding member of the international artist-run biennial CAFKA, the Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area, and the Artistic Director of peace of mind, CAFKA.04.
Recent international exhibitions took place at the 4th (Cycles and Systems) and, the 3rd (Laboratory) International Forest Art Path as well as WintergARTen, Vogelfrei 7 in Darmstadt, Germany, the VI Vrsac Biennial in Serbia and Montenegro, the 8th Havana Biennial, Cuba, ArtCanal during the expo.02, Switzerland, and in Canada at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, Render (University of Waterloo Art Gallery), the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, the Durham Art Gallery, the WKP Kennedy Public Art Gallery, North Bay, the Art Gallery of Mississauga, Cambridge Galleries, Gallery Stratford, Ed Video Media Arts Centre, Guelph and Peak Gallery, Toronto.
