Researchers at Fribourg University have found a gene which is capable of preventing the growth of colon cancers.

The gene is activated by non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and could lead to the development of new prevention measures for colon cancer. It works by forcing malignant tumor cells to become more benign.

Switzerland has earned good marks for its efforts to prevent the bribery of foreign public officials.

The OECD praised Switzerland for its proactive stance in the seizure, confiscation and restitution of illicitly obtained assets and referred to new Swiss legislation requiring federal employees to report crimes and irregularities.

Most Swiss consumers would be happy to have cheaper electricity but would draw the line at high-tension power cables close to their home.

Attempts to move to more underground cables have had little political success. But the situation is changing. In Switzerland, battles are taking place that most people are unaware of. These are not conflicts over land or natural resources but over power lines and whether to prevent their proliferation. Swissgrid, the national electricity grid operator, estimates that the power supply system needs to be extended by no less than 1,000 kilometres by 2020.

The Zurich ice hockey club, the ZSC Lions, have signed a partnership deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL).

In a statement published this weekend, the ZSC Lions said it’s the first agreement of its kind between a Swiss hockey club and a team from the world’s top professional league.

The deal, signed on November 8, sees both teams cooperating on player development and scouting. The ZSC Lions management also said it hopes to benefit from the Toronto club’s experience building and operating a modern ice hockey arena.
 
A new arena in Zurich is still in the planning stage, but the Swiss club foresee construction beginning in 2015, with the complex opening two years later.
 
“The cooperation deal with a Canadian team that has a long-tradition of success is very important to us. The Leaf’s management is considered highly competent and success-orientated,” said ZSC Lions CEO, Peter Zahner.
 
The ZSC Lions last won the Swiss championship in 2008. A year later, the club defeated Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the European Champions Hockey League final, despite being the underdogs.
